Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai and his son, R' Elazar, fled from the Romans and hid in a cave for 13(!) years, immersing themselves in study of the Torah and, thus, founded the Holy Zohar.  According to tradition, they were nourished miraculously by a carob tree and a spring.
